How I went about it

RESEarch & Key Insights

Past thesis research and expert interviews insights highlight the joy and connection speaking a language brings to learners and native speakers.

... once the novelty effect wears off, the gamification elements cannot compensate for the design decisions prioritizing... passive receptive skills (listening and reading) over active productive skills (speaking and writing)

- Shortt, M. et al. (2021) ‘Gamification in mobile-assisted language learning: a systematic review of Duolingo literature from public release of 2012 to early 2020’

Duolingo blog articles highlights music's role in language learning, aiming to create engaging, lasting experiences.

Why did you join Duolingo?I love watching anime and wanted to learn Japanese.

How has your experience been with Duolingo? At first, I was all in - completing daily lessons and building a streak. But over time, the exercises started feeling repetitive, and when I lost my streak, I lost my motivation as well.

Are you still learning Japanese? Not at the moment but I still watch anime and listen to Japanese songs on Spotify.

Ideation process

I started my process with a sketch of the user flow focusing on creating a fun experience.

Additionally, the initial wireframes closely resembled Duolingo's current learning experience interactions but that failed to capture the essence of singing a song. I referred to Karaoke app designs such as Smule and StarMaker as well as the iOS Voice Memos app and Camera app.
